Full retrofit to battery-electric operation
The M/S Hamlet, operated by Öresundslinjen, makes up to 8,000 crossings per year between Helsingør and Helsingborg, serving one of Northern Europe’s busiest ferry routes. The vessel is now undergoing a complete retrofit, transitioning from fossil fuel dependency to fully battery-electric operation.

For a high-frequency operation like this, performance, reliability, and charging efficiency are essential. To meet these requirements, Öresundslinjen selected Echandia ERS3 LTO battery systems, enabling clean, zero-emission operation with minimal disruption to schedules.

Why Öresundslinjen chose Echandia:
10-year minimum design life
2–3 times more compact than other chemistries, ideal for retrofit installations
Fast-charging capability, full turnaround charging in just 11 minutes
Class-leading safety, no thermal runaway, no fire risk
Lower total cost of ownership, fewer replacements, reduced maintenance and downtime
Performance and integration
Most competing battery solutions offered an expected lifespan of around five years, requiring costly midlife replacements. Echandia’s battery system is designed for a minimum of ten years of operation under daily high-cycle use, cutting long-term costs and minimizing operational interruptions. Thanks to its compact footprint and lightweight design, the system could be integrated into the M/S Hamlet without major structural changes, which is a key advantage for retrofit projects where space is limited.
After evaluating multiple battery suppliers for this significant conversion project, the superior lifetime and lower weight of the Echandia battery system stood out as the primary reasons why Echandia emerged as the optimal choice for us.

Looking ahead
With rapid charging capability at both ports and a robust, long-life energy storage system, the M/S Hamlet retrofit is an important step toward sustainable, zero-emission operations on the Öresund Strait. Echandia’s fast-charging LTO technology demonstrates how high-frequency ferry routes can transition to full electrification without compromising performance or reliability.
